The client

Lely is the leading global producer of robotic systems for dairy farmers. Founded in 1948 as a family business, Lely has been on a mission to make farmers’ lives easier by offering innovative solutions for almost all activities in the cowshed, including milking, feeding, or cleaning.

With over 1,600 patents and 3 R&D departments, Lely is a renowned farming innovator serving customers from more than 45 countries.

This project was big, so Lely collaborated with Datamole, a renowned data & AI company in the Czech Republic. A team of dedicated people worked for several months on this project, which included at least one project manager, a team lead developer, at least 3 developers and myself as the designer.

Main challenge

Redesign & optimize the LSSA App

Data from 30,000 robots is quite a lot, so Lely provides their farmers an app that helps them navigate the data that they require, the Lely Support Service App.

The app has been used for years, but its design and navigation was old, unfriendly and it provided more headaches than answers. Our goal was to create an intuitive user interface, with fast access to information, without overwhelming the users with unnecessary noise.

I was in charge of sketching, coming up with creative ideas for displaying huge amounts of data, high-fidelity design, prototyping and getting the assets ready for the development team.

Wireframing

Base on the user research conducted by the PM and after several meetings, we were able to create several low-fidelity sketches of the app, for different use cases; different widgets were created for technicians, service managers and team leads.

We tested the usable wireframes on a focus group and integrated that feedback in the final high-fidelity design of the app. We've used the design system as a starter, but created our own brand of widget to better suit the user's needs.

Before going into production, we had to make sure that the users understand and use the app as intended. We added interactions to the final design to make as close as possible to the real thing and conducted practical interviews.

Main goal

Create a user friendly app for
boosting farm and worker productivity

The goal was to redesign the app into a simple and easy to navigate application, while displaying fast useful & important information. We had to create several pages and subpages for Lely technicians, service managers & team leads, each with its own set of responsibilities & permissions.

All 3 of them have different roles, so each of them need to see different type of information first, from financial and overall productivity of the farms and centers, to milking optimizations and individual cow treatments.

Results

More than 30+ Lely centers adopted
the app 6 months after its relaunch

After redesigning I prepared the assets for exports and collaborated with the development team in order to have a smooth transition from the design to the actual app. Within a month the app was up and running and we launched it initially in just 3 Lely centers, to better monitor the progress and adoption.

Within 6 months, more than 30+ Lely centers from all over Europe started adopting the new interface, with praises for its friendly interface, ease of use and more modern look and feel, while adding new features every few months.
